Junior center fielder Chris Emanuele led off the Huskies' bout against Miami with a home run on the first pitch of the game, but the Hurricanes stormed back with four runs in the bottom of the first, holding on for a 5-1 victory Wednesday night at Mark Light Field in Coral Gables, Fla.
Sophomore Adam Ottavino started on the mound for NU (2-3), but allowed the first four Hurricane batters to reach base. He gave up a single to center fielder Danny Figueroa, a walk to right fielder Paco Figueroa, a single to left fielder Jon Jay and then a two-run double to Miami third baseman Ryan Braun to put the Hurricanes on top. Ottavino then threw a wild pitch, allowing Jay to score. The Husky pitcher then recorded two strikeouts before Hurricane catcher Alex Garabedian singled home Braun, making it 4-1 Miami.
Ottavino (0-2) settled down after his shaky first inning and went on to throw seven innings, striking out five, giving up seven hits and allowing five runs.
The Huskies threatened in the top of the fifth when Hurricane starter Ricky Orta (2-1) loaded the bases on three walks, but Emanuele, with two outs, failed to push a run across, grounding out to the pitcher.
The Hurricanes (11-3) did not look back from there.
NU will head back to Bradenton to play two games on Thursday. Game one will be versus Valparaiso at 11 a.m. and game two will be against Air Force at 2:30 p.m.
