Sophomore pitcher Adam Ottavino struck out 11 batters and gave up only two runs, but the Northeastern offense was shut down by Holy Cross, losing, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday morning at Friedman Diamond.
The Crusaders (4-8) scored two runs in the sixth inning off of Ottavino. Catcher Mike Marron led off with a walk, advanced to second on a single by left fielder Jamie Aldrich, stole third and scored on an errant throw by Husky backstop Matt Morizio. Aldrich came around to score on a single by third baseman Mike Schell.
Ottavino (0-4) otherwise had masterful game, giving up just seven hits and the two runs. He walked three to go with his 11 punchouts.
The Huskies (4-10) offense could not get going against Holy Cross starter Mike Miller (2-1), who went five and two-thirds innings giving up only three hits and a walk while striking out seven batters.
NU scored its lone run in the fourth inning when shortstop Arman Sidhu scored on a Miguel Paquette double to the left field gap.
Junior outfielder Chris Emanuele went 0-3 with a walk and a stolen base, ending his season-opening 13-game hitting streak. He has reached base safely in each of the team's first 14 games.
The Crusaders' Scott Hampe pitched the final two innings for the save.
NU will try to end its seven-game losing streak in game two of the doubleheader. Freshman Kris Dabrowiecki gets the start for the Huskies.
