The Northeastern baseball team played to a 1-1 tie with Connecticut through the first nine innings, but UConn pushed across two runs in the 10th and held on to beat the Huskies, 3-1, Tuesday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
With two outs in the 10th, two on and senior Jim Madison (1-2) on the mound, UConn's Tony Mallozzi hit a fly ball just out of the reach of center fielder Chris Emanuele for a two-run triple.
NU (5-11) had two runners on in the bottom of the tenth, but Connecticut closer David Erickson picked off Emanuele at first base to end the game, securing the UConn win and giving Erickson his second save of the year.
Connecticut pitcher Rich Serois (3-2) got the win after throwing three scoreless innings.
UConn got on the board in the first inning when starting pitcher Jeff Hourigan belted a double to right center off of NU sophomore hurler Dave Pellegrine, scoring Russ D'Argento and giving the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
Pellegrine settled in afterwards, tossing eight innings and holding UConn to four hits and four walks while striking out six hitters. NU scored its lone run in the third inning when senior Miguel Paquette drew a bases loaded walk off of Hourigan, scoring junior Matt Morizio, who had tripled earlier in the inning.
The Huskies will resume play on Friday, April 1 when they host Hartford in a non-conference game at 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
