Senior pitcher Devin Monds did not allow a hit to the first 27 batters he faced, but in the 10th inning, in a 0-0 tie, Monds surrendered a single to Hartford leadoff batter Adam Bowser to end his no-hit bid. In the bottom of the inning, the Huskies finally pushed across a run and defeated the Hawks, 1-0, in a thriller at Friedman Diamond Sunday afternoon.
Monds' nine innings of no-hit ball is the longest a Husky pitcher has gone with allowing a hit since Greg Montalbano pitched a seven-inning no-hitter on March 20, 1999. There have been three nine-inning no-hitters in school history, the last one thrown by Joe Killelea against MIT on May 3, 1985.
Monds was absolutely dominant today, retiring his first nine batters before walking Bowser in the fourth inning. After issuing a walk to Hawks designated hitter Mark Trahan in the sixth, Monds set down 12 more batters in a row up until Bowser's hit in the 10th. He had his patented fastball, curveball and changeup today, striking out 14 batters, including seven Hawks in a row from the first inning until the third inning.
After striking out Ryan O'Neill to end the Hartford ninth, the Huskies rallied to try to push across the winning run and give Monds his no-hitter, but with runners on second and third and Hawks reliever Pete Moraski (1-3) pitching, junior Brian Nutting grounded out, ending the threat and forcing Monds to go out and defend his no-hit effort.
In the tenth, Bowser led off with the hit and Monds then walked shortstop Bill Perry to put runners on first and second. Huskies head coach Neil McPhee pulled Monds in favor of senior Tim Bush (1-1), who promptly allowed a bunt single to Ryan Cuscovitch to load the bases.
Bush though mowed down the next two batters, getting each of them to strike out. That set the scene for Trahan to hit a tapper towards the mound that Bush grabbed and beat out Bowser to home plate, a force out, to keep the shutout intact.
In the bottom of the inning, junior Chris Emanuele recorded an infield single and took second on an errant throw by Perry. He then moved to third on a groundout by junior Arman Sidhu. Then, with two strikes on him, senior Jeff Heriot swung and missed at strike three in the dirt, a pitch that Hawks catcher Ryan Crowley could not handle. Heriot ran to first and Emanuele broke for home, and Crowley threw the ball into Heriot's back, allowing Emanuele to cross the plate and win the game.
Emanuele went 4-5 on the day and was the appropriate Husky to score the game-winner.
Monds, who has only pitched once since March 5, set a career-high with his 14 punchouts, besting his previous mark of 10 that he set on May 22, 2004 against Albany.
Hartford starter Jason Krajeski also pitched a brilliant game, allowing no runs and scattering eight hits in eight and a third innings.
The Huskies will look to extend their three-game winning streak on Wed., April 13 when they travel to Amherst, Mass. to play Massachusetts at 3 p.m.
