Junior Chris Emanuele hit a two-run homer in the third inning and sophomore Dan Milano homered in the sixth inning to lift the Northeastern baseball team to a 3-2 victory over Vermont in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies improve to 6-1 in America East and currently own first place in the conference at the moment.
NU got strong pitching from sophomore Adam Ottavino (4-4), who picked up his fourth win in as many starts, rebounding from an 0-4 start. He went seven and a third innings, allowing two runs on nine hits, striking out nine batters and walking three. He got into trouble in a few innings, but managed to get the big outs. On the other side, UVM also got strong pitching from Derek Miller (4-1), who had come into the game having allowed just four earned runs in 40 innings.
However, the Huskies (14-16, 6-1 America East) got to Miller early when junior Jeff Maher walked to lead off the third and then Emanuele hit his blast that cleared the left-center field wall for a 2-1 lead.
Milano followed in the sixth with an opposite-field homer to right for a 3-1 lead.
In the eighth inning, Ottavino got into trouble, allowing a double to Jason Carey and an RBI single to Miguel Magrass to cut NU's lead to 3-2. He then took a line drive by Kyle Brault off his body for an infield single and came out of the game.
Senior Tim Bush came on in relief and got Jay Iannoni to strike out and Kyle Massie to fly out to right to end the inning. He then set the side in order in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The Huskies will go for the doubleheader sweep with senior Devin Monds on the mound.
