Chris Blazek pitched a complete game shutout and Kyle Brault hit a three-run homer as Vermont blanked the Northeastern baseball team, 5-0, in the second game of a doubleheader.
The Huskies had won game one, 3-2.
Blazek (3-2) recorded 12 strikeouts in his seven innings. He got into trouble in the fourth inning when the Huskies (14-17, 6-2 America East) loaded the bases. However, Blazek struck out pinch-hitter Jeff Maher to end the inning.
In the ninth, NU again loaded the bases, but Blazek geared up and struck out senior Jeff Heriot to end the game.
NU left nine men on base.
On the mound, senior Devin Monds (1-4) was cruising along until the fourth inning, when he walked Jason Carey and gave up a single to Miguel Magrass before allowing the homer to Brault.
Monds ended up throwing a complete game in the loss, striking out six batters. He gave up two more runs in the seventh inning.
That was all that Vermont (17-11, 6-2 America East) needed as Blazek did the rest.
The two teams will play the rubber game of this series tomorrow at 11 a.m. Sophomore Dave Pellegrine gets the ball for NU.
