For the second straight game, the Northeastern baseball team got strong pitching, but could not score runs, losing to Vermont in the rubber match of their three-game set with the Catamounts, 5-1, Monday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Huskies' sophomore starter Dave Pellegrine (2-2) allowed five runs on eight hits in seven innings. He was victimized for three runs in the second inning with Frank Rossi getting the big hit, a two-run triple down the right field line.
In the seventh, Kyle Brault hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle to put the Catamounts (18-11, 7-2 America East) up 5-1.
NU (14-18, 6-3 America East) scored its lone run in the fifth inning when junior Arman Sidhu hit a sacrifice fly to left that scored junior Jeff Maher.
Big hits escaped the Huskies all day as they left nine men on base, wasting three hits apiece by seniors Tim Bush and Jeff Heriot. NU stranded a total of 26 runners in the three-game series.
Vermont starter Joey Serafin (5-0), who recently tossed a no-hitter, went six and a third innings, allowing just one run and scattering seven hits.
Northeastern will look to rebound on Wednesday, April 17 when it hosts Rhode Island at 3 p.m.
