The Northeastern baseball team got homers from senior Jeff Heriot and junior Brian Nutting as well as a complete game five-hitter from sophomore Adam Ottavino to defeat UMBC, 5-1, Saturday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field in Baltimore.
Down 1-0 in the sixth, the Huskies (15-18, 7-3 America East) staged a comeback, starting with junior Jeff Maher drawing a walk. Junior Chris Emanuele followed with a single, extending his hitting streak to 15 games, and junior Arman Sidhu walked to load the bases.
That brought Heriot to the plate, and he smacked an Eric Butkiewicz pitch over the right field fence for a grand slam, giving NU a 4-1 lead.
Nutting added a solo shot to center in the seventh to cap the scoring.
Ottavino (5-4) put forth yet another solid effort, going the distance in winning his fifth straight start after starting the year 0-4. He limited UMBC (10-25, 2-8 America East) to five hits while yielding just one run. He struck out 10 batters, giving him 70 punchouts on the season, a career high. At one point, he set down 11 Retrievers in a row.
Butkiewicz (3-6) coughed up 12 hits and five runs in the loss for UMBC.
The Huskies and Retrievers will play a doubleheader tomorrow at 11 a.m. Senior Devin Monds and sophomore Dave Pellegrine are the scheduled starters for NU.
