The Northeastern baseball team built up a 9-5 lead through five innings only to see Connecticut score seven unanswered runs as UConn beat the Huskies 12-9 Tuesday afternoon at C.J. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn.
Connecticut (18-7) opened up the scoring in the first inning with three runs off of freshman Kris Dabrowiecki.
NU stormed back with three in the top of the second when freshman Mike Lyon hit a bases-clearing double down the left field line to tie the game.
The Huskies (6-13) added two runs in each of the next three innings. In the third, senior Miguel Paquette hit his second homer of the season and junior Jeff Maher hit an RBI double to put NU up 5-4.
In the fourth, senior Tim Bush drew a bases loaded walk and junior Chris Emanuele scored on an error by UConn shortstop David Muscatello as the Huskies increased their lead to 7-5.
An inning later, junior Arman Sidhu doubled home Lyon and Paquette followed with an RBI single to give NU a 9-5 lead.
However, the Huskies' pitchers could not nail down the win. UConn scored three runs in the sixth and then tied the game in the seventh when reliever Mitch Duggins hit Russ D'Argento and then allowed him to come home on a wild pitch three batters later.
Duggins (0-1) began the eighth inning and allowed a single, walk, sacrifice bun and a hit-by-pitch before senior Matt Piryk came on. Piryk came on and walked the first batter he faced and then allowed a run to come home on a wild pitch. Catcher Matt Morizio and second baseman Brian Nutting subsequently made errors to allow two more runs to come in.
Connecticut pitcher Jeff Hourigan (3-0) pitched the final three innings of the game, not allowing NU to score, for the win.
Northeastern returns home to play Boston College tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
