Sophomore Dave Pellegrine threw six shutout innings and junior Chris Emanuele hit a grand slam as Northeastern swept a doubleheader from Hartford, winning game two, 18-2, Saturday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
The Huskies (8-14, 2-0 America East) had defeated the Hawks (2-9, 0-2 America East), 14-4, in game one.
The 32 runs NU produced in the doubleheader is the most runs it has scored in a twinbill since scoring 27 in two games versus Drexel in 2000. The Huskies' school record for runs in a doubleheader is 36, set in 1986 against Boston University.
NU got off to a quick start, sending all nine men to the plate and scoring six unearned runs off of Hartford hurler Adam Flaherty (0-2). Hawks third baseman Luke Trahan committed two errors in the inning, and the Huskies capitalized.
With Emanuele, who reached via Trahan's first error, on second, senior Jeff Heriot tripled down the right field line, and scored on a groundout by senior Miguel Paquette. Senior Tim Bush then reached on Trahan's second error of the inning, opening the flood gates as junior Matt Morizio doubled home Bush, sophomore Dan Milano walked and junior Brian Nutting followed with a three-run homer, a deep blast to the back of the Huskies' bullpen, giving NU a 6-0 advantage.
NU batted around again in the third and added six more runs, capped by Emanuele's grand slam. Emanuele during the doubleheader went 4-7 with two homers, eight RBI and seven runs scored.
The Huskies pounded out another run in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth to cap their second America East win.
Not lost in the sea of runs is Pellegrine's performance on the mound. He went six innings and gave up just one hit, walking three and striking out 10. Pellegrine (2-1) recorded seven consecutive outs via strikeout between the second and fourth innings.
Northeastern will look to sweep the Hawks tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Friedman Diamond. Senior Devin Monds is scheduled to take the hill for the Huskies.
