The Northeastern baseball team completed a season sweep of UMBC today, beating the Retrievers, 12-7, on the strength of four RBI by junior catcher Matt Morizio, Sunday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field in Baltimore.
NU knocked off UMBC, 6-1 in the first game today.
With the win, the Huskies (17-18, 9-3 America East) have regained first place in the conference with nine games remaining.
Morizio had a big game for NU, going 3-4 with a single, triple and a home run. Freshman Mike Lyon, who homered in game one, stroked a career-high four hits. Sophomore Dan Milano also homered for the Huskies, who are now 11-4 since beginning the year at a dismal 6-14.
Sophomore Dave Pellegrine (3-2), though not stellar, picked up the win with six and a third innings of work, allowing 14 hits and six runs. UMBC (10-27, 2-10 America East) starter Zach Clark (0-6) took the loss after giving up seven runs in three innings.
The Huskies went wild on Clark in the third inning, sending all nine men to the plate and scoring five runs. Highlights of the inning included Morizio's two-run triple and Milano's two-run homer.
In the doubleheader sweep, the Huskies pounded out 29 hits and scored 18 runs. The players who had the biggest days included Morizio, who went 5-9 with five RBI, Lyon, who went 6-9, and senior Jeff Heriot, who went 4-7.
Junior Chris Emanuele went 1-6, increasing his hitting streak to 17 games, matching the school's record, which was set by Preston Carroll in 1980. Emanuele, who started the season on a 13-game hitting streak, has notched at least one hit in 30 of NU's 35 games.
The win was the 499th victory for Huskies head coach Neil McPhee in his illustrious career. He will shoot for 500 on Tuesday, May 3 when NU plays at Harvard at 3 p.m.
