Seniors Tim Bush and Miguel Paquette hit back-to-back home runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and catapult the Northeastern baseball team to a 5-2 victory over Maine in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Orono, Maine.
In the eighth, junior Chris Emanuele reached base after getting hit by a pitch. Bush then took Scott Robinson (1-1) deep to put NU up 3-1, and Paquette followed with a blast of his own for a 4-1 advantage.
Sophomore Adam Ottavino (6-4) pitched a complete game and struck out a career-high 12 batters, bringing his season total to 90, only 15 punchouts away from the school record. He limited the Black Bears (27-15, 10-6 America East) to two runs on five hits and is now 5-0 in his last six starts.
The Huskies (21-19, 11-4 America East) were stymied by Maine starter Steve Richard, who kept NU off the scoreboard for the first six innings. In the seventh, sophomore Dan Milano singled home junior Matt Morizio for the team's first run.
Northeastern also scored in the ninth when junior Arman Sidhu singled in Milano from second.
The Huskies and Black Bears will finish the doubleheader at 3 p.m.
