Despite leading 4-0 after the first inning, the Northeastern baseball team allowed five runs in the second inning and six more in the fourth, falling to Maine, 13-7, in the second game of a doubleheader at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.
NU had defeated the Black Bears in the first game, 5-2.
The Huskies (21-20, 11-5 America East) got off to a good start in the first inning off of Maine starter Troy Martin. Senior Tim Bush brought in the first run, grounding out to score junior Arman Sidhu from third and move senior Jeff Heriot to third.
After walks to senior Miguel Paquette and junior Matt Morizio, sophomore Dan Milano reached on an error by third baseman Curt Smith, scoring Heriot. Junior Brian Nutting then plated Paquette and Morizio with a single to right center for a 4-0 lead.
Senior Devin Monds (2-6) could not hold it. He alllowed 10 runs on seven hits, walking five and fanning just one.
In the second, he allowed five runs, the big hit coming from center fielder Joe Hough, who smacked a two-run double to right. Monds and freshman Kris Dabrowiecki combined to allow six runs in the fourth. Greg Creek hit a two-run single to left center and Joel Barrett doubled to score two more runs.
Black Bears (28-15, 11-6 America East) reliever Jason Weymouth (2-2) pitched the final four innings for the win.
Bush homered in the fourth for the Huskies, his second on the day and team-leading ninth of the season.
The Huskies are now half a game behind Binghamton for first place in America East. The Black Bears are one game back. The two teams will play the rubber game of their series on Sunday at noon. Sophomore Dave Pellegrine gets the call for NU.
