The Northeastern baseball team stormed back from a 4-0 defecit, scoring five runs in the eighth inning to defeat Maine, 7-4, Monday afternoon at Mahaney Diamond in Orono, Maine.
With the win, the Huskies (22-20, 12-5 America East) tied Binghamton for first place in America East with three games remaining in the regular season. The Huskies have clinched a spot in the tournament.
In the eighth inning, NU's first seven batters reached base, leading to the five-run outburst. Against Maine's Greg Norton (8-3), sophomore Dan Milano walked, junior Brian Nutting doubled and freshman Mike Lyon got an infield hit to load the bases. Junior Chris Emanuele singled in Milano and junior Arman Sidhu drew a walk to bring in Nutting. Senior Jeff Heriot then singled up the middle, scoring Lyon and Emanuele and knocking Norton out of the game.
Scott Robinson entered the game for the Black Bears (28-16, 11-7 America East) and promptly gave up an RBI single to senior Tim Bush as Sidhu came home to give NU a 5-4 lead.
The Huskies added insurance runs in the ninth on Sidhu and Heriot RBI singles to make it 7-4.
Sophomore Dave Pellegrine (5-2) benefitted from the outburst. After allowing a two-run double to Aaron Izaryk in the first and an RBI double to Joel Barrett and an RBI single to Izaryk in the third, he settled in to retire 14 of the last 17 batters he faced. He went eight innings, yielding four runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out eight.
Bush finished the game and recorded his third save of the season with a scoreless ninth and two strikeouts.
NU will host Marist tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. at Friedman Diamond.
