Sophomore Adam Ottavino allowed just one hit in seven innings and became just the third Northeastern pitcher to crack the 100-strikeout mark in a season as the Huskies blanked Stony Brook, 5-0, Friday afternoon at Suffolk Community College Field.
The win moves the Huskies (24-20, 13-5 America East) into sole possession of first place in the conference, one game ahead of Vermont and Maine and one and a half games ahead of Binghamton. All four teams have already clinched spots in the tournament.
NU jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning as junior Chris Emanuele led off the game with an infield hit, advanced to second on a groundout and was plated on a single to center by senior Jeff Heriot.
In the seventh, the Huskies broke the game open with four runs. Junior Brian Nutting flied to center with the bases loaded to bring home a run and then scored twice more on an error and a wild pitch. Freshman Mike Lyon scored the fourth run of the inning when junior Arman Sidhu singled him home.
Ottavino (7-4) improved his record to 6-0 in America East play after dominating the Seawolves (22-27, 9-10 America East). He did not allow a hit until the fifth inning and fanned 11 batters, bringing his season total to 101. Donald Eason holds the NU record with 105 punchouts in 1954. Steve Grolnic is the only other Husky with 100 strikeouts, achieving the feat in 1966.
Seawolves starter Jon Lewis (4-5) allowed five runs on six hits in six and a third innings to take the loss.
NU and Stony Brook will wrap up the regular season tomorrow with a doubleheader at 11 a.m. The Huskies need just one victory to clinch the regular season title.
