Northeastern Huskies

Field Hockey

Northeastern 3, Princeton 1

Ashley Webber scored twice for the Huskies as the Northeastern field hockey team won their fifth game in a row, beating Princeton, 3-1, on Sunday at Sweeney Field.

Webber put the Huskies on the board early when she took a pass from Whitney Shean and shot it through congestion to the back of the net at 5:57.

NU held on to a 1-0 lead through halftime, when Webber again scored early in the half, this time unassisted on a weaving run to the goal. This goal, the eventual game-winner, was Webber's team-leading seventh of the season.

"[Webber]'s got great skills," Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh said. "It's great to have not just one player, but several players who perform for us offensively."

The Tigers got themselves on the board at 55:14 when Elizabeth Williams scored her first goal of the season. NU found some insurance, though, when Natalie Singelais sent a pass to the far post where Michaela O'Malley was waiting to tap the ball in for her second goal of the season.

The game was marked by spectacular goaltending at both ends of the field. Princeton goalkeeper Allison Nemeth made eight saves in defeat. Huskies keeper Colleen Duffy, fresh off winning her collegiate debut on Friday, allowed just one goal while making seven saves, including several crucial saves on Princeton penalty corners late in the second half.

The Huskies take the field again on Friday when they travel to New Hampshire to face the Wildcats at 7 p.m. in Durham. They return home to Sweeney Field on Sun., Sept. 25 to host Towson in their first ever league game in the Colonial Athletic Association at 2 p.m.
