Women's Soccer

Northeastern 0, Boston College 0

The women's soccer team's biggest game of thus far ended in a tie on Wednesday, as the Huskies and No. 9 Boston College finished a double overtime affair knotted at 0-0 at Parsons Field. Although the game was fraught with scoring opportunities, neither squad was able to take advantage. BC was the highest ranked team NU has ever played as well as the first ACC opponent in the program's history.

Both teams' defenses were extremely effective throughout the game. However, it was BC's defenders that dominated the first half, preventing Northeastern from a single shot the entire period. Most of the half was spent in NU's zone, with the Huskies unable to mount much of an attack.

Northeastern began to hit more of an offensive stride after the intermission, but the game was still primarily a defensive affair. Boston College Junior midfielder, Jenny Maurer, had a team high four shots in the second half, including two on net, but NU stood its ground.

The excitement began to grow as the game remained scoreless going into the 20th minute of the period. Finally, Northeastern got its first major scoring chance when freshman Caitlin Whelan, the team's leading scorer, had an open shot on net but kicked it wide right of the goal. It was only a few minutes later that Boston College goalie Arianna Criscione was caught out of the net and out of position by junior Felippa Petruccelli. However, a BC defender came out of nowhere to block Petruccelli's shot just short of the net. As the period was winding down, Whelan nearly scored on a header off of Hanna Olsson's corner kick, but Criscione jumped over the freshman forward and knocked the ball out of the box. As regulation came to a close, both teams were still scoreless.

In the first overtime, both Whelan and Junior Kristin Kowalik had shots with potential, but neither resulted in a score. Defender Mary Schenck also had a shot on goal for the Eagles, but the Huskies forced a second overtime.

The second overtime was dogfight, as both teams desperately wanted the victory. Boston College was not about to give up its first goal of the season, while NU was fully aware of how substantial an upset of BC would be. Neither team managed a shot on goal in the period, but each squad seemed on the verge. Then suddenly, with only seconds left, Whelan broke away toward the Eagles' goal. Criscione sprinted out towards the oncoming forward and Whelan tripped over her just as she was about to rocket the ball towards net. No foul was called on the play and the hard fought match ended in a 0-0 draw.

Husky goalie, Mariel Wilner was superb, making four saves and disrupting countless other scoring chances. It was her first shutout of the season. Criscione made one save and has still yet to allow a goal through seven games this season. Boston College is the only remaining Div. I school in the country that has yet to be scored upon. They are now 6-0-1 on the season.

The 3-4-1 Huskies will play their first conference game of the season this Saturday against Hofstra at Parsons Field at 6 p.m.
