Coming off its last game, in which NU registered only two shots in a loss to Boston University, the field hockey team came out with a much different strategy on Sunday afternoon against Towson. Unfortunately for the Huskies, none of the team's 30 shots found the back of the net as the team lost a heart-breaking 1-0 game to Towson in double overtime in Towson, MD.
The game pitted two very evenly-matched squads, and the score proved that. Northeastern came out strong in the first half, peppering Towson goaltender Christina Armer with 11 shots while NU junior goaltender Liz Centofanti faced only one shot from the frustrated Tiger offense. The second half featured more of the same, as NU outshot Towson by a margin of 11-9.
Towson's best opportunity to win the game came when Centofanti took down Towson's Christina Boarman on a breakaway in the 61st minute. But with Boarman having to leave the game due to injury, Angie Brewer replaced Boarman and didn't put the penalty stroke on net.
After 70 minutes, however, a winner could not be decided. Heading into overtime, NU held decided advantages in shots (22-10) and penalty corners (15-5), yet could not put a goal past Armer to end the game.
The Huskies' inability to score finally caught up with them in the 93rd minute of play, as Towson's Kelli Roberts scored off a rebound by teammate Kim McEwen to give the Tigers a victory in both team's CAA opener.
Senior co-captain Sarah Eckhoff led the Huskies with eight shots, one less than McEwen's game-high nine attempts. Sophomore Ashley Bascetta added six attempts, while senior co-captain Whitney Shean and junior Stephanie Casper both took five shots.
For the second consecutive game, Centofanti played brillantly for the Huskies but took the loss. The Husky junior made nine saves, including five in the two overtime periods, yet saw her record drop to 1-2 on the season. For Towson, Armer saved the day by making an incredible 21 saves without letting up a goal.
With the team's overall record dropping to 3-5 on the season, the Huskies also find themselves at 0-1 in CAA play. The Huskies will return home on Wednesday afternoon when the team welcomes Brown to Sweeney Field for a non-conference contest at 3 p.m.
