Senior co-captain Whitney Shean has not been having a typical season when looking at her goal total so far in 2006, but the senior still finds a way to come up big for her team. In danger of falling three games below .500, Shean tallied her second goal of the season 3:40 into the first overtime to give the NU field hockey team (4-5, 0-1 CAA) a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Brown (5-2, 2-0 Ivy) on Wednesday afternoon at Sweeney Field.
Shean scored at the 3:40 mark of overtime after receiving a pass from sophomore Ashley Bascetta, who had cut through a pair of Brown defenders.
Things did not look good early for the Huskies, as the home team had a very tough time penetrating the Brown defense. NU managed six shots in the opening half, but did not take one penalty corner to Brown's three. The Huskies put some offensive pressure on the Bears late in the half, but could not come away with a goal.
The scoring opportunities in the beginning of the second half were few, as both teams seemed content to bide their time. Brown finally got on the board first at the 47:45 mark, as Stacy Gugliotta beat a Northeastern defender in front of the net and put a shot past junior goaltender Liz Centofanti.
For Northeastern, which came into the game with a scoreless streak of 169:46, things looked bleak. The team fought on, however, and finally ended the streak at 230:14 when junior Stephanie Casper took a feed from Harriet Hoyer and beat Brown goaltender Kristen Hodavance to her right.
NU continued to put the pressure on the reeling Brown defense, as Shean nearly scored the game-winning goal with time running out in regulation. The Huskies out-shot the Bears 10-2 in the second half.
With the game tied, the teams went seven-on-seven for overtime. NU came out strong, attempting to control the pace. Eventually Bascetta, who had a good game patrolling the midfield for the Huskies, found a streaking Shean down the right side for the game-winner.
Centofanti earned the win in net for the Huskies, marking the third consecutive game in which she gave up only one goal. She made four saves in raising her record to 2-2 on the season. Hodavance played well for Brown in a losing effort, making six saves.
The Huskies hope to carry the momentum from today's win back into conference play, when the team travels to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra on Friday evening.
