Field Hockey

Northeastern 1, VCU 0 (OT)

The field hockey team won a 1-0, nail-biter in overtime on Sunday against Virginia Commonwealth in a must-win conference game for the Huskies. Junior Ashley Bascetta scored the game-winner for the Huskies, giving Northeastern its eighth win of the season.

In the first half, it was all defense as both Northeastern and VCU made great defensive plays. For the Huskies, Jillian Wilkes fought hard in the zone and twice gained repossession for the Huskies. On one play, Wilkes intercepted a pass that was headed right in front of the Husky net. Reigning CAA player of the week Suzanne Hazelzet also made some great blocks for the Huskies.

Northeastern had came close to scoring, as Pam Aldridge had a breakaway at midfield and passed the ball to Ashley Webber who was in position to take a shot. But the Rams' defense would not let up and Webber's attempt was thwarted. The Huskies took 10 shots in the first half, and because of a strong VCU defense was not able to convert any to goals.

Northeastern also played a very clean half as they did not give VCU any penalty corner opportunities.

The defense picked up where it left off in the second half, as Ashley D'Ambra fought hard for the ball to win back possession for Northeastern. Hazelzet also made a game-saving play when VCU's Merel Kroon took a shot from the right hand side of the circle that Hazelzet was able to knock away.

The Rams' defense again did its part. Late in the second half, Meg Sweeney had a breakway for the Huskies but was stopped by VCU's back line. Northeastern kept the pressure down in the Rams' zone towards the end of the second half but could not break through the defense. At the end of regulation, the game was tied 0-0.

Overtime would prove to be as exciting as regulation, as Ashley Webber had a breakaway early on and was in great position to give the Huskies a win, but VCU goalie Brittany LoVullo made a tremendous kick save to keep the Rams alive.

Finally after seven minutes into overtime, Harriet Hoyer had the ball for the Huskies and broke away at midfield. She passed the ball up the right hand side of the field to Bascetta who carried it all the way to the circle. She took a hard shot from the right side and it landed in the lower corner of the cage, giving the Huskies a 1-0 win. It marks Bascetta's fourth goal of the season and Northeastern's second overtime win.

With the victory, the Huskies improve to 8-11 and 4-4 in conference play. Up next, they'll take part in the CAA Championship in Virginia Beach, Va., from Nov. 1-4.
