Huskies beat Wildcats, 10-9

The Northeastern University baseball team opened its regular season by defeating the Villanova Wildcats 10-9 in game one of a doubleheader at Manatee Community College in Bradenton, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies provided a balanced offensive attack in the game, scoring once in each of the first six innings and twice in each of the last two innings, with six players finishing with multiple hits. Shortstop Mike Lyon hit a home run and a double, right fielder Tony DiCesare went 3-5 with a double, triple, two RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, center fielder Frank Compagnone added three singles, catcher Frank Pesanello had an RBI triple and designated hitter Alex Fox hit the eventual game-winning RBI double to lead the Husky offense.

Sheldon McDonald picked up the win for the Huskies in relief. Starter Kris Dabrowiecki pitched the first five innings for the Huskies and gave up four runs to earn the no-decision. Dan Zehr recorded the final two outs to pick up the save, while Bobby Carrington pitched 1-1/3 innings for the hold.

The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the third inning, but the Wildcats battled back to tie it at six in the top of the sixth inning. After the Huskies were able to pull ahead 10-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Wildcats scored three runs in the top of the ninth to fall just short. The difference in the game was Alex Fox's RBI double that came with two down in the bottom of the eighth frame, scoring James Donaldson from second base.

Northeastern moved to 1-0 with the season-opening victory, while Villanova fell to 0-5.
