Northeastern played a great 70 minutes of field hockey against Old Dominion, but the Lady Monarchs were able to put in the game-winner less than a minute into overtime and take a 1-0 victory over the Huskies on Sunday at Sweeney Field. Old Dominion's Kathleen Shea scored the only goal of the game, breaking up NU goalkeeper Colleen Duffy's perfect day. She made eight saves.
"We played tough and went after them, we got good passing and good defense but we've got to finish it" said Northeastern head coach Cheryl Murtagh. "We didn't sit back the whole game, then we sat back in overtime. So it's disappointing but we got 70 minutes that wasn't disappointing."
"We've got to create more opportunities, get more shots off and get more penalty corners," Murtagh added.
The first half went scoreless with both teams getting solid scoring opportunities. About halfway through the first set, Kaela Barker made a long pass to Pam Aldridge, who took the ball into the circle all alone. She was unable to get a shot off. Shortly after that, Carolyn Malloy got a strong shot off and Old Dominion goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll made the save. The ball trickled by the goal post and out of bounds.
A minute later, Ashley Bascetta got a shot on goal and Malloy hit the post with a shot off the rebound. Old Dominion had four penalty corners in the first half, including two as the half expired. ODU's Katelyn Smither had two rocket shots with the clock at 0:00 and Duffy made the save on both to get the Huskies out of the half scoreless.
The second half was another defensive battle, with Old Dominion getting six shots off and Northeastern three. Duffy was superb in goal in the half, making three saves. Aldridge put a shot on goal in the final minutes of the half.
Old Dominion got the ball immediately in overtime and took it down the far side of the field. Katie Ueberroth made a pass to Shea, who was open in front of the goal, and Shea shot it in for the game-winning goal at 70:37.
Northeastern has a pair of games next weekend. The Huskies host Stanford on Saturday at 6 p.m., then play New Hampshire in Durham, N.H. on Sunday at 5 p.m. Saturday's game will have live video on GoNU.TV.
