Huskies roughed up by No. 11 Drexel

Box score

The Northeastern Huskies fell to the Drexel Dragons on Sunday afternoon, 5-1 at Buckley Field. Sophomore Carolyn Malloy scored the Huskies' lone goal with 1:23 remaining in the game to spoil the Dragons' bid for the shutout. Junior Jen Cairone notched a hat trick for Drexel and junior Christina Mastropaolo recorded her sixth straight game-winning goal.

The Dragons took the play to the Huskies, outshooting NU 22-3 in the game. Drexel put 19 of its 22 shots on net, while the Huskies managed to score on their only shot on goal of the game. With the win, the Dragons improve to 15-2 overall and 5-1 in the CAA. The loss was the Huskies fourth straight, dropping the team's record to 9-8 and 3-3 in the CAA.

Mastropaolo, the CAA's leading scorer, put the Dragons ahead 18 minutes into the game. Off a penalty corner, junior Kim Tunnell threw the ball to the front of the net, where Mastropaolo was able to redirect it to the boards.

Three minutes later, the CAA's second-leading scorer, Susan Ciufo, added to the Dragons' advantage. Ciufo jumped on a loose ball in the Huskies' zone and fired it past NU keeper Lizzie Priest, who was taken out of the game after the goal.

Backup keeper Samantha Sewell immediately came under fire, but managed to keep the Dragons at bay for the next 32 minutes. Then, at the 53:40 mark, Drexel finally broke through again.

Ciufo set up Cairone for her first goal of the game to make it 3-0. Only four minutes later, Cairone had her second, tapping in a cross from Mastropaolo. Cairone then completed the hat trick at 64:53 (only 11:13 after her first goal), jamming home a rebound in front of the net.

Malloy produced a bright spot for the Huskies in the 69th minute with her ninth goal of the season. The Windham, N.H. native has at least a point in each of her last three games.

Northeastern returns to action on Friday, Oct. 30 vs. VCU at Sweeney Field.
