The No. 9 Northeastern Huskies played to a 1-1 tie against Providence, before falling in a 13-round, 26-player shootout on Sunday at Schneider Arena. Junior
Kristi Kehoe scored the game-tying goal midway through the third period and sophomore
Florence Schelling stopped 37 shots in net. Freshman
Danielle Kerr scored NU's only shootout goal, while Alyse Ruff and Christie Jensen netted for the Friars.
After a six-round stalemate that produced no goals, Kerr gave the Huskies (7-1-2, 3-0-2-1 Hockey East) the lead on the team's seventh shootout attempt. Ruff answered right back, however, evening the competition on the very next shot for Providence (3-4-5, 2-1-3-2 Hockey East). Six rounds later, Jensen scored again to propel the Friars to an extra point in the Hockey East standings. It was the longest shootout in Northeastern program history. The Huskies are now locked in a three-way tie for first place in the conference standings with New Hampshire and Providence (nine points apiece).
Ashley Cottrell put Providence on the board first with only two seconds remaining in the second period. The goal, which was Cottrell's seventh of the season, broke Schelling's shutout streak of 184:30 consecutive minutes. The Oberengstringen, Switzerland native had not conceded a goal since the second period of the Bemidji State game on Oct. 23.
Kehoe and senior
Ginny Berg combined for the game-tying goal at 9:57 of the third. After freshman
Casey Pickett chipped the puck up the wall, Berg skated into the Friars' zone on a two-on-one with Kehoe. Berg then delivered a perfect pass onto the tape of Kehoe, who fired it past Providence goaltender Genevieve Lacasse.
Lacasse played an outstanding game for the Friars, stopping 28 shots in 65 minutes, before turning aside 12 of 13 shootout attempts.
Freshman
Brittany Esposito, senior
Lindsay Berman and Kehoe each had five shots for the Huskies. The stout Northeastern defense extended its streak of allowing two goals or less to 11 consecutive games dating back to last season.
Unbeaten in their last five games, the Huskies return to the ice for a pair of matches vs. Maine on Nov. 14-15 at Matthews Arena.
