Huskies beaten by St. Mary's in Hawaii

Box score

Northeastern was held without a three-point field goal for the first time in 13 years, and St. Mary's drained 10 three-pointers as the Gaels came away with 78-67 victory over the Huskies in the quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Northeastern (2-6) will play in the consolation bracket against Western Michigan Wednesday at 3 p.m., Eastern. St. Mary's advances to the winners bracket and will play USC Wednesday at 5 p.m., Eastern.

Despite 20 points from both Matt Janning and Manny Adako, the Huskies succumbed to a Gaels offense that shot better from three-point range than from the inside. St. Mary's was 10-for-21 from three-point range (47.6 percent) and just 16-for-37 from inside the line (43.2 percent). The Huskies shot an even 50 percent for the game, but did not hit a three-pointer for the first time since Feb. 8, 1996, a span of 398 contests. Northeastern also struggled from the free throw line, making 11-of-16 while the Gaels were 16-for-18 from the charity stripe.

The first half proved to be a competitive battle between Northeastern's interior offense and St. Mary's three-point shooting. The Huskies got out to a 6-0 start with a pair of baskets by Adako and a Janning crossover weave through two defenders for a layup. However, St. Mary's used three-pointers to get back into the game. Clint Steindl's three at 11:05 cut NU's lead to 14-13. NU extended that lead to five, 18-13, after Chaisson Allen made a nice bounce pass to a wide open Adako, who drained the 18-footer at 10:13.

The Gaels came back with a 12-4 run to take a 25-22 lead at 7:18 after a pair of three-point plays by Omar Samhan and three-pointers from Jorden Page and Matthew Dellavedova. St. Mary's built a seven-point lead, 35-28, with 2:47 left in the first. The Huskies cut that lead to four at halftime after an alley oop dunk from Janning to Nkem Ojougboh and one free throw from Adako. The Gaels missed their last four shots of the half and went into the break up 35-31.

In the second half, the Huskies broke through with a 14-6 run, capped by an Adako baby hook at 13:44 that gave Northeastern a 45-41 lead.

But the three-pointers came back to haunt the Huskies as St. Mary's connected on three treys in a span of 2:01. Ben Allen's triple at 11:28 put St. Mary's up 52-49. The Gaels quickly expanded that lead to eight as Northeastern went without a basket between 11:44 and 8:53. NU got the deficit down to four, 58-54, with 7:48 to play, but another three-pointer by Page quieted NU's rally.

The same thing happened a few minutes later as the Huskies got within four after a pair of Adako free throws made it 63-59 with 4:08 to play, but Dellavedova sank another three from the top of the key off a kickout pass from Samhan.

NU tried to foul its way back into the game, but the Gaels were 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the game's final two minutes.

Samhan led the Gaels with 19 points and eight rebounds. Three other Gaels scored in double figures, including Dellavedova (17), Allen (15) and Page (13).

In addition to Janning and Adako's stellar performances, Ojougboh added 17 points, nine boards and two blocks.

NU's consolation bracket game against the Broncos on Wednesday will be televised on ESPNU at 3 p.m., Eastern, 10 a.m., Hawaiian.
