Huskies topple William & Mary, 3-1

Box score

The Northeastern Huskies earned their first CAA win of the season with a 3-1 road victory over William & Mary on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Crystal Poland scored two goals and sophomore Carolyn Malloy tallied a goal for the second straight game. The Huskies improve to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in CAA play.

Poland's two-goal effort gives the freshman a team-high five goals and 12 points through nine games.

Northeastern took the lead at the 14:26 mark of the first half when Poland raced in alone on goal and beat Tribe keeper Camilla Hill.

The Huskies could not hold the lead entering the break, however, as the Tribe equalized with 52 seconds remaining in the first half. Senior Kelsey Jackson ripped a shot past NU goalie Lizzie Priest from the top of the circle for her first goal of the season.

Malloy put the Huskies back in front for good at the 42:21 mark of the game with an unassisted goal off her own rebound.

Poland added an insurance tally 18 minutes later. Off a penalty corner, Poland took a pass from sophomore Kaela Barker and fired it past Hill for the 3-1 advantage. With Barker's assist, the Huskies are now 5-0 on the season when she records at least a point in a game.

Priest made three saves in net for the Huskies, who outshot William & Mary by an 18-5 margin.

Northeastern returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 30 against Harvard at Sweeney Field at 4 p.m.
