The Northeastern University men's basketball team came out of the locker room in the second half on a 23-6 run and cruised to its 10th consecutive victory, 73-48 over Towson Wednesday at the Towson Center.
The victory improves Northeastern's record to 12-7, 7-1 in the CAA. The Huskies remain in a tie for first place in the conference with Old Dominion and George Mason. The winning streak, which is the third longest active run in the nation, is the program's longest since an 11-game winning streak during the 1986-87 season.
Northeastern, which shot 53.7 percent for the contest, tied a season high for three-pointers with 10.
Chaisson Allen led the Huskies with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and 4-of-6 from three-point range.
Manny Adako had a perfect night, going 6-for-6 from the field and 3-for-3 from the free throw line for 15 points.
The Huskies also tied a season-high with 19 assists and had just 12 turnovers. It's the fifth time over the last seven games that NU has had more assists than turnovers.
Northeastern had a tough first half, but played well enough to lead by two. Early on, Towson was hitting the three ball well as Josh Brown drained a pair and Calvin Lee knocked down a triple. The Tigers led 16-12 on Brown's second three-pointer at 10:42.
The Huskies then went on a 10-0 run to take a six-point advantage.
Kauri Black got the Huskies going by stealing the ball from Josh Thornton, and
Baptiste Bataille finished off the play with a fastbreak layup. Bataille then passed to Allen, who sank a three-pointer to put Northeastern on top 17-16. After a pair of Towson misses,
Mathiang Muo got into the scoring column with a wide open three off a kickout pass from Ojougboh, who closed out the streak with a running jumper at 7:51 that made it 22-16 in favor of the Huskies.
Things fizzled out the rest of the half for NU though as
Matt Janning picked up his second and third fouls, putting him on the bench for the rest of the first half. The Huskies went scoreless for the next 6:21 as the Tigers clawed back to take a 24-22 lead.
Bataille got the Huskies back on track by stripping Isaiah Philmore of the ball and getting an easy layup. Then Muo hit a jumper with 52 seconds left to allow the Huskies to reclaim the lead, 26-24, at halftime.
In the second half, it was all Huskies as they came out on the offensive with their 23-6 run that saw the team make 7-of-10 shots in the half's first eight minutes. Allen and Janning were the catalysts as they rained three-pointers on the Tigers. Allen opened the half with a three off a pass from Adako. Janning followed with a three off a long pass from Allen with shot clock winding down, putting the Huskies up 32-26 at 17:57.
Janning drilled another three at 13:59 to put Northeastern on top by 15, 45-30. Then Adako took over with nine consecutive Huskies points, including a hook shot and a foul with the free throw at 10:32 that gave the Huskies a 20-point lead, 52-32.
Adako had 13 of his 15 points in the second half. The Huskies shot 62 percent in the second half while holding Towson to 32 percent for the game.
The Huskies squashed any hopes of a Tigers comeback with a 10-2 run from 6:42 to 4:05 that included a pair of three-pointers by
Joel Smith and one from Allen.
The Tigers were led by Brown, who had 14 points on 6-of-9 from the field.
Northeastern is home at Matthews Arena for the next three contests, starting this Saturday in an afternoon showdown with VCU at 2 p.m. The game will broadcast live on Comcast SportsNet New England.
