Box score

Chaisson Allen shot 70 percent from the field and scored a game-high 19 points to go with six assists, leading Northeastern to a 74-64 win over Old Dominion Saturday at Matthews Arena.

Northeastern (14-8, 9-2 CAA) has now won 12 of its last 13 games and has tied Old Dominion (17-6, 9-2 CAA) for second place in the CAA with the tiebreaker in hand. Both teams are one game behind George Mason (10-1).

Saturday was Northeastern's Coaches vs. Cancer Awareness game with the coaching staff and athletics department administrators wearing sneakers with suits. In an effort to bring fans to the arena and raise awareness for cancer, Coen pledged a dollar for every student who attended the game. A season-high 3,061 fans attended the contest, including 1,014 students. Coen will donate $1,014 to the American Cancer Society.

"Northeastern University prides itself on the community service of our students," said Coen. "They're involved in so many things. And for our program to partner up with our student body in this fight against this deadly disease, it was my pleasure to. I'll write that check any day of the week."

The first half was all about three-point shooting as the Huskies made 8-of-12 attempts from behind the arc. NU quickly built up a 10-point lead with three treys, including a pair by Matt Janning. His triple at 12:56 made it 16-6.

Old Dominion got back into the contest and cut the deficit to four, 25-21, on Keyon Carter's three-pointer at 7:46, but the Huskies came right back with an 11-2 run that was punctuated by Allen's 23-foot three-pointer off a kickout pass from Janning. NU led 36-23 with 3:30 left in the half.

Northeastern stretched that lead to 15 at halftime with a pair of three-pointers. Vinny Lima connected on one at 1:45. Then right before the buzzer, Allen was trapped at midcourt, but found Nkem Ojougboh waiting at the top of the key. The senior center swished home a three at the buzzer, igniting the crowd and putting the Huskies on top 42-27 at the break.

NU made eight first-half three-pointers while shooting 58 percent from the floor.

In the second half, the Huskies moved their action to the inside. After a turnover by Gerald Lee and a steal by Janning, Allen made an easy fastbreak layup to give NU its largest lead of the game, 17 points, at 46-29.

After Manny Adako's layup at 17:28 made it 50-34 NU, Old Dominion responded with a 12-2 run as the Huskies had five turnovers and just two shot attempts between 16:35 and 13:00. Lee picked up a three-point play after making a layup and drawing a foul at 12:10 to get the Monarchs with six, 52-46.

However, the Huskies remained calm and answered back with six consecutive points to go back on top by double digits. Allen made a jumper in the paint at 10:20, followed by an Adako 16-footer at 9:35 and a Janning layup under the basket at 8:14 off a long pass from the three-point line by Allen with the shot clock at two.

The two teams traded baskets, but Allen seemingly put the game away with another three-pointer, the only one of the half for NU, at 2:58 making it 65-52. Old Dominion began to foul the Huskies, but Northeastern was 6-for-8 from the line inside of two minutes.

The leaders in the CAA in field goal percentage coming into the game, the Huskies finished the game with a season-high 59.5 percent shooting (25-for-42) and made 9-of-16 from three. In addition to Allen's 19, Janning finished with 17 points and tied his career high with seven assists. Adako cleaned up on the boards with eight to go with 13 points.

Lee led Old Dominion with 16 points. The Monarchs shot 41 percent (23-for-56) from the field and outrebounded the Huskies 34-21, but committed 13 turnovers that led to 19 NU points.

Northeastern heads on the road for a pair next week, starting Tuesday at Delaware at 9 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
