Huskies stun No. 20 Stanford in overtime thriller

Box score

Nicky Graham's goal 2:04 into overtime capped a thrilling second half comeback, as the Huskies rallied to upset No. 20 Stanford, 2-1, at Sweeney Field on Monday afternoon.

The win is the Huskies' second victory over a ranked opponent this season, and it snapped a three-game losing skid. Northeastern improved its record to 7-9, while Stanford dropped to 9-5 on the season.

Junior forward Carolyn Malloy assisted on Graham's fifth goal of the season. She had the ball on the left sideline and shot it towards goal, where Graham tipped it past Stanford goaltender Alessandra Moss (seven saves).

Graham may never have earned her overtime strike if it wasn't for the play of sophomore goaltender Lizzie Priest. Priest tied a season-high with 13 saves, including a huge save in overtime right before the eventual game-winner.

The two teams failed to score in the first half, with Stanford putting seven shots on target. Stanford recorded 25 total shots in the game, with 14 shots on goal.

The Cardinal opened the scoring just 2:37 into the second half. On one of the their eight penalty corners in the match, sophomore back Becky Dru converted on a penalty corner to give Stanford a 1-0 lead.

Northeastern tied the game at the 57:30 mark. Graham helped begin a rush upfield with Crystal Poland. Lindsay Bennett joined the rush as a trailer, and eventually the freshman forward found Poland on the right post for Poland's eighth goal of the season.

Poland finished with seven shots, four of which were on goal. The Huskies recorded 15 total shots, nine of them on target.

The Huskies now have four games remaining, all against CAA opponents. The next game is Friday, Oct. 22, when Northeastern hosts Hofstra at Sweeney Field. Game time is set for 2 p.m., and fans can catch all the action on GoNU.TV.
