The Northeastern women's soccer team won an overtime thriller on Senior Day on Sunday, taking down Georgia State, 2-1.

The Huskies came out on an absolute tear to begin the contest, after an opening ceremony to honor seniors Kristen Blake, Lesley Condie, Sarah Fylak and Tinna Nielsen.

Sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir had the first two chances for NU, but her header in the fourth minute sailed wide before a rocket shot in the fifth minute was saved by the Panthers' Kelliane Collins.

Freshman Hillary Savoy fed junior Veronica Napoli for a beautiful set-up in the 10th minute, but Napoli's shot hit the post. The Huskies reeled off the first twelve shots of the contest, including six on goal.

In the 17th minute, junior Erin McGaffigan served in a corner to classmate Kelly Matthews, who headed her first goal of the year past Collins to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies' lead was short-lived, as Georgia State's top goal scorer Sarah Bennett took a feed from Jewel Evans and put her ninth goal of the year past Fylak to equalize.

The contest would go to halftime tied at 1-1, despite the Huskies thoroughly dominating the action and holding a 17-2 advantage in shots.

The second half featured solid play from both sides, and a majority of the action took place jostling for field position in the midfield. Junior Laura Holmstedt nearly put the Huskies on the board in the 53rd minute, but her open look sailed just over the crossbar.

Georgia State's Alyssia Feronti had the next good look, but her free kick in the 57th minute sailed wide of the net. Holmstedt nearly picked up an assist in the 74th minute, but her cross in the box to an open Blake missed the midfielder's lunging kick by inches.

Bennett attempted to pick up another goal in the 79th minute, but Fylak was there to make the save on her shot from the top of the box.

Samuelsdottir and Napoli worked a give-and-go in the 80th minute, but Collins was able to save Samuelsdottir's open look. Napoli had the last chance of regulation, but Collins saved her shot from the edge of the box in the 83rd minute and the match went to overtime.

Despite outshooting the Panthers 26-8 in regulation, the match was tied at 1-1 heading into extra time. However, it was not long into overtime before Samuelsdottir fed Napoli in the box, who was able to put her second goal in as many games past Collins for the golden goal winner in the 94th minute.

Fylak made the start in net for the Huskies and recorded three saves. Collins stopped nine shots in the loss for Georgia State.

The Huskies improve to 9-7-1 (4-5-1 CAA) on the year, and head coach Tracey Leone is now guaranteed a winning season in her first year at Northeastern. Georgia State falls to 11-6-2 (5-4-1 CAA) on the year.

The Huskies return to action next Saturday when they travel to Hofstra to take on the CAA-leading Pride. Game time is set for 4:30.
