The Northeastern women's soccer team battled Drexel to a 1-1 draw on Sunday at Parsons Field.
The first half of the contest was scoreless, but was not short on action. Drexel got the first chance of the match in the eighth minute, when leading scorer Jenna Lindsay blasted a shot at Husky keeper sophomore
Michelle Sopko, who made a diving save on the chance.
The Huskies nearly struck twice in the 18th minute, when sophomore
Greta Samuelsdottir fired a rocket that struck the post. Junior
Veronica Napoli was able to corral Samuelsdottir's rebound, but her put back attempt was blocked by a Drexel defender.
Samuelsdottir had another near miss in the 23rd minute, hitting the crossbar. Lindsay responded for the Dragons by firing two close shots in the 25th minute, but Sopko was able to save both.
Senior co-captain
Kristen Blake was the next Husky to attack, as she split two Dragon defenders and had an open look on Drexel keeper Nicole Sinclair, but her shot sailed wide. Blake later fed Napoli on a beautiful cross in the 41st minute, but Napoli's shot missed high, and the match went into halftime tied, despite a 14-7 shot advantage for NU.
It was not long into the second half when the Huskies were finally able to find the back of the net. Junior
Kelly Matthews floated a lob pass to Samuelsdottir, who split two Drexel defenders before putting a move on Sinclair and firing in her sixth goal of the year in the 56th minute.
The Huskies' lead was short-lived, as Drexel's Kim Chiarelli fed Jess Lowinger on the far side of the box before Lowinger fired a low shot past a lunging Sopko for her first goal of the season in the 59th minute.
Matthews was nearly able to put in a goal of her own in the 69th minute, but Sinclair was able to save her header.
After a hard foul on Napoli, who appeared to be in the box when she was fouled, Drexel's Elizabeth Matta was assessed a yellow card and the Huskies earned a free kick from the top of the box. Samuelsdottir fired a hard shot on net, but Sinclair was able to make the save to keep the contest tied.
The last real chance of regulation came from a shot by Lindsay, who led Drexel with eight shots, but was tipped wide by Sopko.
Northeastern's best chance in the two overtimes came on a free kick from Napoli, but Sinclair was there to make the save. Chiarelli and Lindsay each had shots saved by Sopko, and Sinclair was able to stop a hard shot by Samuelsdottir in the 103rd minute to preserve the tie.
Sopko started in net for the Huskies and recorded a career-high 11 saves. Sinclair notched nine saves for the Dragons.
Head coach
Tracey Leone used just 12 players for the Huskies, and 10 different players played the entire 110 minutes. Drexel head coach Ray Goon was much more liberal with his substituting, as twenty different Dragons saw action in the match.
With the draw, Northeastern moves to 7-3-1 on the season with a 2-1-1 mark in CAA play. Drexel goes to 4-7-1 (0-3-1).
The Huskies continue their homestand on Friday when they welcome George Mason to Parsons Field. Game time is set for 6 p.m., and live video will be available on GoNU.TV.
