Huskies vs. Catamounts:
The Huskies and Catamounts conclude their weekend series today with a Saturday matinee at 3 p.m.
Yesterday, the two teams skated to a 1-1 draw. Senior co-captain
Alyssa Wohlfeiler potted the lone goal for the Huskies.
Florence Schelling made 25 saves to preserve the tie.
Peggy Wakeham's third period goal pulled Vermont even. Goaltender Roxanne Douville made 43 saves in the tie.
Scouting Vermont:
• The Catamounts hosted Yale last weekend and came away with a 4-1 victory on Friday before skating to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.
• Vermont began Hockey East play the weekend of Oct. 15-16 when the Catamounts hosted Boston College. The Eagles swept Vermont, and in doing so outscored the Catamounts, 7-1, over the weekend.
• Senior forward Celeste Doucet leads Vermont in goals (3), assists (3) and points (6). She also leads the team with one shorthanded goal and is tied with three others for the most power play goals with one.
• The Catamounts have relied mostly on the senior class to light the lamp, including senior defenseman Saleah Morrison (1-3-4), senior forward Teddy Fortin (2-0-2) and senior defenseman Peggy Wakeham (3-0-3).
Consistency Counts
Florence Schelling has posted three-straight 25-save performances which has helped the Huskies maintain a five-game unbeaten streak. Schelling is 2-0-1 in those three games, all of them at Matthews Arena. She has only allowed one goal in each of those games.
Killing 'em softly
The Huskies killed off all nine of Vermont's power play chances yesterday afternoon. Northeastern has now killed off the last 13 power plays it has faced, dating back to the second period against Princeton on Oct. 22.
Marvelous Marty
Senior defenseman
Julia Marty was named the Pure Hockey Player of the Week by Hockey East on Tuesday. Marty tallied four points on one goal and three assists in a 5-1 win over Rensselaer on Oct. 24. She also recorded an assist against Princeton on Oct. 22. Her four-point performance on Sunday was the first time a Husky tallied four points since Chelsey Jones notched five points against Maine on Dec. 3, 2006.
Stonewall Schelling
Junior goaltender
Florence Schelling joined Marty, her Swiss Olympic teammate, in receiving a weekly honor from Hockey East. Schelling's back-to-back 25-save performances against Princeton and Renssealer earned her Defensive Player of the Week honors. She allowed just one goal in each game. Schelling was named Defensive Player of the Week seven times last season.
Wealth of winners
Five different Huskies have potted game-winning goals this season. Through its first five wins last season, Northeastern received game-winning goals from just three players.
The five skaters who have put Northeastern ahead for good are
Brittany Esposito,
Stephanie Gavronsky,
Kristi Kehoe,
Rachel Llanes and
Alyssa Wohlfeiler.
Short and sweet
The Huskies netted two shorthanded goals on Oct. 16 that ended up being the difference in a 6-4 win at Robert Morris. Freshman Claire Stantostefano and senior
Kristi Kehoe were responsible for the tallies. Santostefano's goal opened the scoring for Northeastern and it was the first shorthanded goal since
Brittany Esposito lit the lamp on Oct. 31, 2009 at Vermont, a 1-0 Huskies win.
