The Northeastern women's soccer jumped out to an early lead, but eventually fell to George Mason, 3-1, on Friday at Parsons Field.

The game's action got off to a quick start, as George Mason's Tiana Kallenberger escaped from the Huskies defense and broke away to take a shot on Huskies keeper Michelle Sopko, but Sopko was able to make the big save in the 4th minute.

The next two chances came off the foot of Huskies' junior forward Veronica Napoli in the 8th and 13th minutes, both shots from the speedy striker were stopped by Patriots keeper Alex Bodenschatz.

The scoreless draw was broken in the 16th minute, when the Huskies were able to score off a corner. Junior Erin McGaffigan fed the ball in to senior co-captain Tinna Nielsen, who blasted a shot from the top of the box past Bodenschatz. The goal was the first of the Hjoerring, Denmark native's career.

Mason would respond quickly, when Kallenberger got another open look and fired a shot at Sopko, who was again able to stop the forward's blast. However, a long rebound went to a wide-open Mary Kate Lowry, who put in her first goal of the season to tie the contest.

Napoli attempted to counter in the 21st minute, firing her third consecutive shot on goal, but Bodenschatz was there for the save.

In the 31st minute, freshman midfielder Hillary Savoy set up senior co-captain Kristen Blake for an open look, but a Patriot defender was able to make a heroic block to keep the game tied.

McGaffigan nearly got her second assist of the contest in the 33rd minute, when she fed sophomore Greta Samuelsdottir, but Bodenschatz was again able to come up with a big save.

In the 43rd minute, Mason gained a free kick deep in the Huskies zone, and after a scramble in front of the net Kimmy Moss put her first goal of the year past Sopko to give the Patriots a 2-1 lead.

The game went into halftime tied, despite a 10-5 shot advantage for Northeastern. However, all five of George Mason's shots were on goal, while just four Husky attempts reached the keeper.

The Huskies came out hard in the second. Their efforts nearly paid off in the 49th minute, when sophomore Marcela Bedoya fed McGaffigan, whose header sailed just wide.

The action was furious in the midfield for a good portion of the second half, until McGaffigan fired a shot that was saved in the 75th minute. The Huskies gained a free kick in the 79th minute, but Bodenschatz stopped the resulting header from Samuelsdottir.

In the final desparate minutes of the contest, the Huskies let up a goal to Mason's Zania Barnum in the 85th minute, sealing the contest.

Sopko started in net for the Huskies and recorded six saves. Bodenschatz got the win for the Patriots, stopping nine shots.

Sloppy play was part of the Huskies downfall, as despite a 19-9 advantage in shots, they committed 13 fouls and went offsides seven times. The Patriots were also incredibly efficient on offense, with all nine of their shots also being shots on goal.

The Huskies look to rebound from the loss on Sunday when they welcome CAA foe Towson to Parsons Field at 1 p.m. Live video of the contest will be available on GoNU.TV.
