Huskies let lead slip away in 4-2 loss at Maine

Box score

Northeastern carried its first lead into the third period this season, but a three-goal flurry from Maine completed the weekend sweep at Alfond Arena, 4-2.

Veterans Tyler McNeely and Wade MacLeod accounted for Northeastern's goals while each assisted on one another's tallies. Classmates Randy Guzior and Steve Silva completed the senior-dominated score sheet, each registering an assist in the loss.

Sophomore goaltender Chris Rawlings turned in another great performance, steering aside 36-of-40 shots. Maine's goaltender, Dan Sullivan, made 17 stops.

Northeastern attempted 19 shots for the second-straight night at Maine while the Black Bears pummeled NU's net with 40 tries. The Huskies only got off four shots in the final period.

The Huskies' power play took a step back after a sound performance on Friday night, going 0-for-5 with only two shots while Maine went 1-for-9. Sophomore Mike McLaughlin was shown the door early in the second period, keeping NU's PIMs average up, as Northeastern finished with 11 infractions for 33 minutes.

Rawlings got off to a great start by denying Joey Diamond on the doorstep only 1:30 into the game.

Almost a minute later, the Huskies killed their first of three power plays in the first period with the first being assessed to rookie Garrett Vermeersch at 2:43 with a hooking call. Gustav Nyquist posed the biggest threat on the power play, but whiffed on a loose puck to Rawlings' left side.

Momentum swung in favor of Northeastern after the kill as McNeely and MacLeod tossed a couple grade-A scoring chances on Sullivan. The Huskies' persistence paid off as McNeely netted his third of the season at 7:23. Guzior helped chip the puck out to MacLeod on the far boards and zipped it out to McNeely in the middle of the zone. Maine's defense broke down and the Burnaby, B.C. native smoked it past Sullivan's blocker for the early 1-0 lead.

The Huskies penalty-killing unit continued to shine, backing penalties handed out to rookies Cody Ferriero (11:14 – interference) and Rob Dongara (17:41 – tripping). Northeastern almost countered on the kill as McNeely and Silva carved out a 2-on-1 with 32 second reminaing in the first, but Sullivan poke checked Silva's attempt into stands.

McLaughlin was told to hit the showers with a game misconduct early on in the second stanza at 1:45 after a high hit on Robby Dee in the neutral zone. Northeastern's penalty kill stood tall for the first three minutes before Spencer Abbott put Maine on the board at 4:28. The Black Bears set a nice screen, hindering Rawlings' vision as NU's netminder couldn't make out the angle of the puck. Abbott's delivery knotted the game up, 1-1.

The Huskies squashed any momentum Maine had built up in the second after Northeastern's top line worked together to gain a 2-1 advantage at 18:53 of the second period. McNeely worked along the corner boards and was able to squirt the puck out to MacLeod in NU's zone. MacLeod shifted over to Silva in stride, but Silva reconnected with MacLeod across center ice. MacLeod tore through Maine's defense and beat Sullivan over the blocker once again.

Dee started off the third frame with a holding penalty at 2:59 but was quickly reduced to a 4-on-4 session after rookie Brodie Reid was cited for tripping at 3:29. Forty seconds later, Diamond took advantage off a loose puck in front of Rawlings and was able to poke it through the clutter. The puck barely inched over the goal line at 4:19 to tie the game up, 2-2.

The equalizer electrified the Alfond Arena patrons as the Black Bears' offense came in droves at Northeastern for a three-minute spurt. The torrent pace was capped off by Ryan Hegarty's game-winner at 6:27.

Maine charged the net, but Rawlings denied Maine's advances. Matt Mangene targeted Rawlings' chest, but the puck bounced out to a waiting Ryan Hegarty. Hegarty roofed the puck as Rawlings was in a vulnerable position and Maine never looked back after.

Klas Leidermark put back Mike Cornell's rebound at 12:22 of the third to further solidify the triumph.

Head coach Greg Cronin called a timeout at 17:35 and then pulled Rawlings in favor of the extra attacker at 18:35, but Maine's persistence kept the Huskies at bay as Maine prevailed, 4-2.

Northeastern concludes its final installation of a three-game road swing next Friday, Nov. 19 at Providence. The Huskies opened their season at Schneider Arena and were dealt a 3-2 loss. NU closes out the season series with the Friars at Matthews Arena on Saturday, Nov. 20. Both contests are slated for 7 p.m.
