PHILADELPHIA - The Huskies' bid for their first ever CAA championship came to an end on Saturday as the second-seeded Old Dominion Lady Monarchs defeated Northeastern, 4-0, at Drexel.
The Lady Monarchs will face Drexel in the title game tomorrow afternoon. The third-seeded Huskies finished their season at 10-11. They compiled a 5-3 regular season conference record.
Northeastern had the majority of chances in the first half, as the Huskies outshot Old Dominion, 11-5. However, the Lady Monarchs scored first at the 8:42 mark when Anna Kern one-timed a Kathryn Kirk pass past
Lizzie Priest (four saves).
Just under seven minutes later Paige Clutter made it 2-0 when she gathered her own rebound and slotted it past Priest.
The Huskies had more chances in the second half, but Northeastern was snake-bit as
Lindsay Bennett hit a post and
Carolyn Malloy nearly missed after dribbling down the center of the circle.
Loran Hatch potted the last two goals for Old Dominion; the first came at the 39:14 mark while the second goal came at the 47:22 mark.
Overall, Northeastern outshot Old Dominion, 14-8.
Crystal Poland, who led the CAA in shots during the regular season, had four shots on target. Devon Seifert made six saves to earn the shutout.
Despite the defeat, the Huskies can hold their heads high. Before the loss, the Huskies had won four of their last five games. Included in that run were victories over two ranked opponents, as well as an overtime win against Virginia Commonwealth to secure a place in the postseason.
