Matt Janning and
Chaisson Allen scored 21 and 19 points, respectively, to help lead Northeastern to a 62-53 victory over Georgia State Wednesday at Matthews Arena. The Huskies have now won four straight and 15 of their last 16 games.
Northeastern (17-8, 12-2 CAA) maintains a one-game lead in the CAA, ahead of George Mason and Old Dominion. The 12 CAA victories matches a program record, set in 2005-06 and matched last season.
The Huskies were 22-for-43 from the field (51.2 percent) and improved their record to 9-1 when shooting at least 50 percent from the floor. The NU defense limited Georgia State (10-16, 4-10 CAA) to 37.7 percent shooting (20-for-53) and forced 15 Panthers turnovers that led to 17 Husky points. The defense also held Georgia State leading scorer Joe Dukes (13.4 PPG) scoreless.
Janning, who was 6-for-12 from the field, added two assists, two steals and four rebounds. He now has 1,712 points, 500 rebounds and 325 assists for his career, making him just the second person in program history to record at least 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 300 assists in a career. He joins Dave Caligaris (1974-78) in that elite group.
Allen, who scored 15 of his 19 points after halftime, was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field, 3-for-3 from three-point range, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the second half.
The first half was a dead heat as both teams had their runs. The Huskies benefited from Janning's hot shooting early on, including a three-pointer at 12:35 that put the team up 15-11.
However, Georgia State came back while the Huskies went into a deep spell. The Panthers went on a 10-0 run that spanned 6:40. Trey Hampton came up big during the run with eight consecutive points, including the alley oop dunk off a pass from Dukes at 7:57 that gave Georgia State its largest lead of the game, 21-15.
However, Janning brought the Huskies back with 10 points in the half's final six minutes. He ended GSU's run with a jumper at 5:55 and followed with a three-pointer at 4:10 that tied the game at 22-22.
Baptiste Bataille stole the ball from Trae Goldston and fed Janning for an alley oop dunk at 3:34 to wake the crowd up and give the Huskies a 24-22 lead. After a Hampton dunk tied the game again, Janning drilled a three-pointer.
The half ended with Hampton hitting an open three before the buzzer to tie the game at 29-29. Hampton had 13 first-half points and ended up leading the Panthers with 16 at game's end.
The second half started slow as only six combined points were scored in the first 5:15. Georgia State took its last lead of the game at 13:09 when Jihad Ali drained a triple to make it 34-33.
After a Panthers turnover, Allen heated up the Huskies with a three-pointer at 11:58 that started a 14-3 Northeastern run.
Joel Smith hit a big three-pointer during the run to up the NU lead to five after the Panthers had closed within two on a three-point play by Marques Johnson. Allen punctuated the rally with another three at 9:34 to put the Huskies up by 10, 47-37.
Georgia State closed to within three again, but Allen put the game away with five consecutive points to give NU a 10-point lead again, 55-45, with 2:57 left. Despite making only 69 percent of its free throws in the game, Northeastern made them in the clutch, going 7-for-10 in the game's final two minutes.
"We've been through it before - you see it around the country, that February is usually upset month, where guys start to get a little mentally fatigued from the season - and I think that's where some of our experience can come in," said Northeastern head coach
Bill Coen. "They've already lived through that last year and are determined not to let it happen again.
"We were fortunate that we were home tonight and could overcome some of that mental fatigue."
Northeastern hits the road for a pair, taking on William & Mary Saturday at 7 p.m., followed by UNC Wilmington next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
