Jamie Conroy's lay up with 13 seconds remaining broke a 52-52 tie to push Northeastern to a 56-52 win over Hofstra on Sunday afternoon. The Huskies snap a two-game losing skid and improve to 10-14 on the season and 5-8 in CAA play.
Kim Carr led Northeastern with her fourth double-double of the year, pouring in 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Huskies outscored the Pride 34-24 in the second half using strong shooting to help overcome a 28-22 halftime deficit, marking the sixth time this season that Northeastern has come back to win the game after trailing at halftime.
The teams traded leads for the first 13 minutes of the game until Hofstra's Candice Bellocchio hit a lay up to spark a 10-0 run for the Pride over 4:30 to give Hofstra a 26-16 lead. The Huskies managed to score the final four points of the half to make it a six point game heading into the break.
Hofstra rode the hot hand of Nicole Capurso, who went 3-of-5 from three point range for 11 points in the first half as the Pride shot 42.9 percent from the floor and 50 percent from three.
Northeastern was held to 38 percent shooting and were led by Carr's nine first half points.
The Huskies scored the first six points of the second half to tie the game at 28-all, prompting a 30-second timeout from Hofstra just 1:44 into the final frame. Once again, the teams traded baskets until a three-pointer from
Kendra Walton gave Northeastern a four point lead at 36-32 with 13:45 to go. Just about three minutes later, Hofstra tied the game on a lay up from Jess Fuller, one of her 12 points in the second half.
The Huskies responded as Walton drained a three, but Fuller and Shante Evans hit baskets to give the Pride a one point lead at 48-47 with five minutes left. After Walton hit one of two free throws to knot the game at 48, Hofstra's Sam Brigham sank a three pointer to make it 51-48 Hofstra with four minutes remaining.
Carr's lay up with one minute tied the game back up for the seventh time. Hofstra turned the ball over with 39 seconds left and Conroy drove to the lane to lay in the go-ahead basket. On the ensuing possession, Hofstra once again turned the ball over and Carr hit two free throws with three seconds on the clock to ice the win for the Huskies.
Walton was the only other Northeastern player in double figures, finishing with 13 points, hitting both of her three point attempts.
Kashaia Cannon added eight while Conroy had six points and four assists. The Huskies had 11 steals in the game and out-rebounded the Pride, the CAA's best rebounding team, 33-27.
Hofstra was led by Fuller with 14 points while Capurso had 13 for the Pride who drop to 14-11 overall and 7-6 in league play.
Northeastern returns to action on Thursday, February 18 taking on UNC Wilmington at 7 p.m. at Solomon Court. It is the Huskies' Pink Zone event and all fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game.
