Northeastern had its five-game winning streak put to rest after suffering a 7-1 setback at Boston College on Sunday afternoon. Senior
Kyle Kraemer posted the Huskies lone tally in powerplay fashion while Northeastern was outshot, 50-23, in the backend of the two-game set.
Boston College controlled the offensive tempo throughout the first period as indicated by its 18-6 advantage in shots. The Huskies registered approximately three or four attempts in the waning moments, but it was the Eagles that drew first blood at 19:32.
On a broken play in Northeastern's zone created by Joe Whitney, the puck squirted out to Brian Gibbons in the neutral zone. Gibbons was escorted by two Eagles in transition, but he opted to take the open wrist shot from 25 feet out for the 1-0 advantage.
The Eagles broke the game open in the second with a trio of tallies in a three-minute span. Pat Mullane started the flurry at 4:12 on a one-time snipe on freshman
Chris Rawlings' doorstep to take the 2-0 lead. Paul Carey connected with Mullane from behind the net to set up the scoring play.
Chris Kreider was the beneficiary of a botched Northeastern clearing attempt at 5:57. Rawlings sent the puck to the near boards, but Kreider tracked it down and managed to find the back of the net with an unattested wrister to build the three-goal pad.
Cam Atkinson's short-handed tally extended the lead to four at 7:19 of the second. Philip Samuelsson was taken away for hitting from behind at 6:26, but while Northeastern was trying to set up its powerplay, the Eagles poked it loose in the far corner. Boston College had numbers in NU's zone and Gibbons fed Atkinson on the near post to beat Rawlings.
Freshman
Jake Newton was whistled for hitting from behind at 13:33, giving way to BC's first powerplay marker seven seconds later. Ben Smith connected with Gibbons at 13:40 for the 5-1 lead.
Immediately following the goal, Gibbons leveled a Husky after the whistle, yielding Northeastern's first goal of the game. With 20 seconds remaining in NU's powerplay, junior
Wade MacLeod offered up a perfect pass to Kraemer in the slot to stop the bleeding at 15:20. Sophomore
Alex Tuckerman earned the secondary assist to tally his first point since Jan. 9 against UMass Lowell.
Gibbons capped off his hat trick at 11:43 by plowing his way through on a faceoff in the Huskies' zone. Immediately after the puck dropped, Gibbons bulled his way through and unleashed a slap shot for the 6-1 lead. NU head coach Greg Cronin sent in rookie
Bryan Mountain to clean up the remaining 8:17 of the contest.
Jimmy Hayes added BC's seventh tally on a wrap-around at 19:39, solidifying the final count, 7-1.
Northeastern returns to Matthews Arena to host #13 New Hampshire on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. The Huskies' All-Decade Team (2000s) will be released prior to puck drop.
