Second half surge powers Huskies over George Mason

Deanna Kerkhof led three Huskies in double figures scoring a career-high 21 points as Northeastern shot 70.6 percent in the second half to down George Mason 70-57 on Sunday at Solomon Court.

After trailing 33-28 at the half, Northeastern cranked up the effort defensively to set the tone for the second as the Huskies forced five straight George Mason turnovers while going on a 9-0 run to take the lead for good at the 14:38 mark of the second.

George Mason led by as many as six in the first half, which featured four ties as the Patriots took a five point lead at the break. The Huskies were held to just 37 percent from the floor while GMU converted 43.3 percent of its shots. Kim Carr led Northeastern with 11 first half points while Ashleigh Braxton also had 11 points for George Mason.

Kashaia Cannon's three pointer capped the 9-0 run for Northeastern who extended the lead to 13 points, holding George Mason to just two field goals over a seven minute span. The Patriots pushed it back to a six-point game at 61-55 with 1:57 remaining, but Northeastern hit nine of 10 free throws to ice the win.

Kerkhof also had career-highs in rebounds with five and assists, finishing with four while shooting 6-of-9 from the floor, hitting three 3-pointers. Carr finished with 19 points on 6-of-7 shooting, adding eight rebounds in the process. Cannon rounded out the scoring for Northeastern with 15 points. The Huskies improve to 8-12 overall and 3-6 in league play.

Rashauna Hobbs led George Mason with 17 points while Braxton added 14 as the Patriots fall to 8-12 overall and 1-8 in CAA.

Northeastern returns to action on Thursday, February 4 taking on Georgia State at 6 p.m.
