Huskies edge UNC Wilmington 60-54

Brittany Wilson recorded her sixth double-double of the season with a 25-point 11-rebound performance as the Huskies held off a late charge from UNC Wilmington to defeat the Seahawks 60-54 on Thursday. Kim Carr added 17 points and seven rebounds for Northeastern who shot 52.5 percent for the game.

Northeastern opened up a 16-point lead in the first half, using a 17-0 run over five minutes to take a 24-8 lead with 7:38 left in the half. Wilson had eight points during that run as five different players scored.

UNC Wilmington whittled away at the Huskies' big lead as the first half came to a close, the Seahawks outscored Northeastern 8-3 in the final 3:16 of the first half to make it a single digit game with NU taking a 31-25 lead at the half.

Northeastern shot an astounding 61 percent from the field in the first half, as the team made its first 10 field goals of the game, missing its first at the 3:35 mark of the half. Wilson had 14 points and eight rebounds at halftime while Carr tallied 10 points. The Huskies held UNC Wilmington to just eight field goals in the first half.

The Huskies pushed their lead back out to 10 early in the second half off a pair of Wilson free throws. Northeastern maintained a lead by as much as 11 until UNC Wilmington capped a 10-2 run with a Greta Luksyte three to make it a four-point game with 13:44 left. NU scored the next seven points to make it an 11-point game once more.

Both teams remained scoreless for almost three minutes until the Seahawks brought it back to a four-point game at 50-46 off a 9-2 run with 4:02 in the final stanza. The Huskies quelled the UNCW rally quickly with a 7-2 run finished off by a Wilson three to make it 57-48 with 1:17 remaining. Carr sank three of four free throws to ice the win for the Huskies.

Northeastern shot 45.5 percent in the second half while holding UNC Wilmington to just 33 percent for the game. The Huskies connected on 50 percent of their shots from long distance, led by Wilson who hit three.

The Huskies also had 11 steals, making it the 14 occasion that NU has recorded 10 or more steals this season, while adding 15 assists off 21 made baskets.

Jamie Conroy finished with seven points and five assists for Northeastern who improve to 11-14 overall and 6-8 in CAA play.

Casey Shawhook led UNC Wilmington with 12 points while Brittany Blackwell added 11. The Seahawks fall to 9-16 overall and 4-10 in league play.

Northeastern returns to action on Sunday, February 21 taking on Georgia State at 2 p.m. at Solomon Court.
