Northeastern (6-5) struggled to find a rhythm in Storrs, Conn. today, falling 12-1 to UConn (11-5) in a weather-shortened match up. A rain delay that lasted more than an hour proved detrimental to the visiting Huskies, who managed seven hits on the day.
JT Ross took the loss for NU.
Sophomore
Matt Miller got two of the Huskies' seven hits, bumping his batting average up to a team-leading .452.
Freshman
Alan Pastyrnak also earned two hits on the day and added a stolen base, his third of the season.
Senior
Tony DiCesare logged an RBI single that brought home the only score for NU. Senior
Brendan Stokes also had a hit, and freshman
Logan Gillis added a hit and a stolen base.
UConn starter Pat Butler threw six innings of shutout ball before being relieved in the top of the seventh. UConn pitchers allowed just the seven hits and three walks to NU in eight innings of work.
Northeastern started strong, opening the game with back-to-back singles from Miller and Pastyrnak. However, a double play and a groundout squashed the charge. UConn responded by scoring one in the bottom of the first, as George Springer walked, stole second, stole third and came home on a Mike Nemeth single.
Ross held UConn scoreless in the second, but the home squad worked another run in the third before tagging NU for five runs in the bottom of the fourth, making the score 7-0.
Northeastern's lone run came in the top of the eighth inning, when Miller singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a DiCesare single to right field.
A threatening fog that had been building up the entire game then provoked the umpiring crew to end the game before the bottom of the eighth, sending NU to the loss.
Northeastern returns to action tomorrow at Friedman Diamond when they take on Central Connecticut State at 3 p.m. Live stats and video will be available at game time. Junior
Brandon McNelis is slated to start for the Huskies.
