The Northeastern University men's basketball team overcame a 16-point first-half deficit to take a one-point lead with one minute left in the game, but William & Mary's David Schneider knocked down a three-pointer with 37 seconds remaining to lift the Tribe to a 47-45 win over the Huskies in the semifinals of the CAA Championship. It was Schneider's only three points of the game after going 0-for-8 from the field for the first 39-1/2 minutes of the game.
William & Mary (21-9) advances to the CAA Championship final, taking on top seed Old Dominion Monday night at 7 p.m. Northeastern (20-12) will await a possible postseason bid when tournaments make their selections next Sunday.
After trailing for nearly the entire game,
Matt Janning put Northeastern on top 43-42 at the 3:03 mark of the second half with a pair of free throws after making a steal and getting fouled going up to the basket.
The Tribe responded with a Marcus Kitts putback after Danny Sumner missed a runner, but
Manny Adako put the Huskies back on top with a hook shot in the paint, making it 45-44 Northeastern with a minute to play.
On the next William & Mary possession, Schneider shook free of his defender on the wing and knocked the down the triple to put the Tribe up 47-45. With 30 seconds left, the Huskies had the opportunity to tie, but couldn't get the ball in the basket. Thanks to offensive rebounds, Northeastern had seven shots at the tie, but none fell in.
The first half proved to be a struggle for the Huskies as they connected on just six field goals, including only three in the final 15 minutes of the half. William & Mary used a barrage of three-pointers and backdoor cuts to take control of the game.
After NU went up 4-0 early, the Tribe launched three three-pointers, including a pair by Sean McCurdy, to go up 9-6. That sparked a 16-2 run William & Mary run that put the Tribe up 16-6. Bataille connected on a three-pointer to end the run, but William & Mary then made it a an 11-point game on Steven Hess' dunk at 6:55.
William & Mary stretched the lead to 16, 31-15, before Adako ended the half with a layup off an outlet feed from Allen. At the 23-second mark, It was NU's first field goal in seven minutes and sent the Huskies into the locker room down 31-17.
However, the Huskies had been in that position before and fought back with an 11-0 run in the second half to make it 31-26. The Huskies notched their first tie with an Adako reverse layup at 8:57 that knotted the score at 37-37. The two teams that dug deep and fought the rest of the way, setting up the dramatic finish.
Northeastern ended the night shooting 34 percent, but shot 44 percent in the second half to fuel the comeback. The Tribe shot 37 percent, but made up for it with seven three-pointers, including Schneider's game-winner. Adako led the Huskies with 14 points, and Janning added 12. Sumner led the Tribe with eight points.
Despite the defeat, Northeastern has much success to look back on. The program achieved its first 20-win season under fourth-year head coach
Bill Coen and first since the 2004-05 season. The team notched non-conference wins over mid-major powers Utah State, Wright State and Kent State, the last one leading to the 2009 Cable Car Classic championship. The team also had an 11-game winning streak, longest in the program since the 1986-87 season. NU went 14-4 in the CAA, its best mark since joining the league in 2005.
