Junior jumper Andrew Staples keyed the Northeastern men's track & field performance with the school's fifth-best long jump mark for the victory at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by UNH on Saturday.

Staples cleared IC4A-qualifying standards by 0.30m with a vault of 7.40m (24'3.5), knocking off David Riley's measurement of 24'1 set on May 11, 1996. Freshman Valery Monplaisir also contended in the long jump, taking 12th with a leap of 6.04m (19'9.75).

Sophomore Sebastian Putzeys put forth a strong showing in the 1,500-meter race with a second-place clip of 4:02.67. Putzeys' time is the fastest 1,500-meter mark of any Husky this season. Junior Kyle Audet turned in a sixth-place effort of 4:04.92 with sophomore Bryan Brunelli wrapped up the 1,500-meter in seventh with a time of 4:05.41. Newcomers Chris Mentas and John Jantz crossed the line in 4:10.25 and 4:18.10, correspondingly, for 14th and 20th.

In the short game, senior Konrad Stefanek entered both the 100- and 200-meter races, finishing 10th and 16th, respectively, with times of 11.93 and 24.13. Rookie Anthony Gentles represented NU in the 400-meter race, grabbing sixth in 50.66. The first-year sprinter outmotored 12 other competitors on Saturday.

In the 800-meter run, freshman Luke Malley was timed in 2:01.04 for sixth while senior Ryan Miling and sophomore Mike Marston concluded in ninth and 11th, in that order, with marks of 2:02.87 and 2:03.66.

Switching over to the throwers, senior Michael Page was listed eighth after a heave of 14.68m (48'2) in the shot put, beating out 11 other hurlers. Junior Lloyd Clarke uncorked a toss of 13.64m (44'9), good enough for 12th place.

In the discus throw, sophomore Mark Mastone unleashed a throw of 30.89m (101'4) to earn 15th place while classmate Mark Rossoll tossed for an 18th-place mark of 30.16m (98'11).

Junior Alex Iannetta clinched eighth with a yank of 49l05m (160'11), topping 15 other entrants in the hammer throw. Rossoll and Mastone concluded the discus with respective tosses of 37.80m (124') for 18th and 33.32m (109'4) for 21st.

Northeastern will trek it to the heartland for the Sea Ray Relays starting on Wednesday, Apr. 7. The University of Tennessee will host the four-day event.
