Starter
Brandon McNelis had a solid outing, going six innings and allowing three runs. He struck out three and did not walk any.
Dylan Maki came in to relive McNelis, pitching a scoreless seventh before allowing five of the first six batters in the eighth reach base. Maki took the loss, moving to 1-1 on the year.
JT Ross stopped the bleeding, getting the final two outs in the eighth inning.
Tony DiCesare hit his 13th career triple, tying the school record for career three-baggers. It drove in the run in the eighth inning for NU after
Matt Miller doubled two batters earlier. DiCesare and Miller each added singles to their extra-base hits.
Alan Pastyrnak also hit a double for NU. He scored on the next batter, as he moved to third on a wild pitch and came home on a sacrifice fly from Miller. Pastyrnak also added a single in the third inning.
CAA Rookie of the Week
John Puttress also earned two hits and scored a run. He led off the fourth inning with a single, moved to third on one of
Frank Compagnone's two singles, and scored on
Jeff Dunlap's groundout. Puttress singled two innings later, but was gunned down trying to steal second.
Maine jumped ahead 1-0 in the first inning after a leadoff triple and an ensuing sacrifice fly. Northeastern was scoreless for the first three frames before busting out with one run in the fourth and another in the fifth.
Puttress' run in the fourth, followed by Pastyrnak's in the fifth were the only scoring for NU until the eighth inning. The double by Miller and DiCesare's triple accounted for the final offense of the day for NU as the Maine bullpen retired the final four batters of the game.
The Huskies get a few days off before traveling to Atlanta to take on offensive powerhouse Georgia State. The Panthers are at the top of the NCAA in runs per game (11.3) and are ranked second in batting average, hits and total runs. Their 77 team home runs are eighth-most in the NCAA.
The first game of the three-game series begins at 6 p.m. on Friday. Check back on GoNU.com for more information.
