Nate Hunter became Northeastern's first IC4A Outdoor champion since Derek Anderson in 2004 by winning the shot put with a heave of 18.15m (59'6.75) on Sunday afternoon in Princeton, N.J.
Hunter, who won both the 2009 Indoor IC4A Championship (61'1.25) and the 2010 Indoor IC4A Championshp (59'0.75), captured his first-career IC4A Outdoor title in his final appearance at the event on Sunday.
The Gloucester, Mass. native outperformed 30 others throwers after matching his third-longest toss of the season. The next closest competitor was New Hampshire's Brice Paey (17.69m – 58'0.5).
Through 21 events scored, Northeastern was tied for 25th place in team scoring. Hunter's victory notched 10 points while junior
Andrew Staples provided three points with yesterday's sixth-place showing in the triple jump (7.36m - 24'1.75).
Hunter has been red-hot in his final postseason for the Huskies. Two weeks ago, the senior became the first four-time CAA shot put champion since Perry Gaskins, (1994-97 – George Mason) after a winning hurl of 18.45m (60'2.5) at the CAA Championship. Last week on his home turf, Hunter claimed his fifth New England championship in the shot put after clearing 18.41m (60'5), topping his nearest competitor by nearly five feet.
Hunter's New England-clinching throw (18.41m – 60'5) on May 6 currently rests as the 13th-best mark in the country, locking him into a spot at the first round of the NCAA Championship in Greensboro, N.C. in two weeks. The two-time All-American qualified for the 2010 NCAA Indoor Championship where he finished 14th after a mark of 17.65m (57'11).
On Friday, May 28, Hunter will vie for his third All-America bid in the shot put and looks to become Northeastern's second-ever NCAA Champion since Boris Djerassi won the hammer throw title in 1975.
