Senior Nate Hunter captured his fifth New England shot put title in a rain-soaked affair at the final day of the 2010 New England Outdoor Championship at Solomon Track in Dedham, Mass. Hunter's victory helped anchor a 10th-place finish (29 points) for the men's track & field team at the three-day championship.

Rhode Island won the 2010 New England team title in dramatic fashion as the championship was decided in the final event. If UMass Lowell defeated the Rams by two spots in the 4 x 400-meter relay, the River Hawks would have emerged victoriously. Instead, Rhode Island thwarted UML's attempt in the final lap of the race. Lowell beat URI by one spot instead of the needed two. Rhode Island finished with 95.33 points while UMass Lowell totaled 90. Boston College finished third with 50.33 points. Northeastern finished ahead of 29 squads.

Hunter's throw of 18.41m (60'5) was his second-best mark of the season as the Gloucester, Mass. native topped the nearest competitor (Brian Paey – New Hampshire) by almost five feet. Along with his 2010 outdoor title, Hunter won this year's New England Indoor Championship, the 2009 indoor and outdoor title and the 2007 indoor championship.

Junior Brian Racca secured eight points for Northeastern with a sound second-place performance in the triple jump. Racca combined for a mark of 14.07m (46'2), indicating his second-longest total of the season.

Along with Hunter's winning performance, senior Michael Page earned a point with an eighth-place finish of 14.87m (48'9.50) while junior Lloyd Clarke fouled on all three of his attempts.

Sophomores Dan Grant and Sebastian Putzeys entered the 1,500-meter run, producing respective times of 4:00.59 and 4:01.38 for 26th and 27th place.

Junior Brian Daly did not record a mark in the pole vault while classmate Andrew Staples was held out of the high jump to avoid any injuries due to the slippery conditions on the runway.

Championship season rolls on for the Huskies as head coach Sherman Hart leads his team to Princeton, N.J. for the IC4A Championship starting on Sunday, May 14 and concluding on Sunday, May 16.
