Katy Applin (Palmer, Alaska) of the women's hockey team was named to the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women's At-Large College Division third team as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday morning. Applin became eligible for Academic All-America status after earning
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women's At-Large First Team honors on May 20.
The Palmer, Alaska native is one of 15 members of the
ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Women's At-Large College Division third team and one of 45 student-athletes throughout the entire country to reap the honor at the university level. In all, 90 women within the university and college ranks were honored.
Applin is the first Northeastern student-athlete to garner Academic All-America status since Aaron Hill (men's track & field / cross country) was named to the second team in 2006. She is the first female student-athlete since Mari Creatini (crew) was named to the Academic All-America second team in 2004.
In regards to women's ice hockey, Applin is the first Husky to earn the distinction. Overall at Northeastern, there have been 12 men and five women named Academic All-Americans. The Huskies have had the honor of boasting six from the first team and second team and five from the third team.
Applin posted nine points (1-8-9) and stockpiled her best plus/minus rating of +5 as a defenseman in her final season on Huntington Ave. She capped her four-year career by scoring 38 points (7-31-38) from the blue line. Applin never missed a game during her time with the Huskies, skating in all 135-career contests since her freshman season.
She was a two-time captain, helping the Huskies' boost their win total by five game in each of the last two seasons. Applin's guidance helped propel the Huskies back into the national spotlight, reaching as high as No. 6 in the country and holding a spot in the top 10 for most of the 2009-10 campaign.
The mechanical engineering major is no stranger to success off the ice, as well. Her most recent academic accomplishment came in the form of the 2010 Jeanne Rowlands Award. The distinction is given to Northeastern's top senior female scholar-athlete for that season.
Applin is a three-time Hockey East All-Academic team selection and a two-time Hockey East Academic All-Star, an honor given to the athlete with the highest GPA at her position. In 2009, she was also named Hockey East's Top-Scholar Athlete for having the best GPA in the entire league. She has made the Dean's List every semester at Northeastern.
Applin posted a 3.94 grade point average this year to make her worthy of Academic All-America honors.
The Women's At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
