Kelley Becherer returns to the United States with four gold medals, as well as two bronze, after a successful performance at the IPC World Championships held Aug. 15-21, in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
Becherer got off to an impressive start, winning the 200 IM with a time of 2:30.32, which set a new American record. Becherer followed this performance with a bronze medal in the 100 butterfly, as she fell to Great Britain's Rhiannon Henry by 2.45 seconds. She then came back to claim another victory, winning the 50 freestyle with a time of 28.00 seconds.
Becherer claimed two more gold medals before the week was over. She bested Valerie Grand-Maison of Canada by 0.71 seconds, to win the 100 freestyle in 59.53. Becherer also won the 100 backstroke in 1:09.25, which was just 0.14 seconds shy of the world record. She claimed her second bronze medal in the 400 freestyle.
The Sheboygan, Wisc., native set four American Paralympic records during her freshman campaign for the Huskies. Her performances in the 50-yard freestyle (24.77) on Nov. 20, 2009, 1000-yard freestyle (11:11.28) on Feb. 6, 2010, 500-yard freestyle (5:22.02) on Jan. 30, 2010, and 100-yard backstroke (102.02) on Jan. 30, 2010 now stand alone atop the S13 record books.
At the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing, Becherer earned gold in the 50m freestyle S13 and bronze in both the 100-meter freestyle S13 and 400-meter freestyle S13. Her performances last week at the IPC World Championships are another step in her reaching the 2012 Paralympic Games in London.
