Despite senior tri-captain Anne-Rieke Stuhlmann's first goal of the season, the Northeastern field hockey team came up short against the host No. 8 Syracuse Orange, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Field.

The Huskies started strong, earning two penalty corners within the first two minutes, as well as notching the first shot of the game. However, the Orange struck first when Shelby Schraden potted her first goal of the season at the 7:26 mark. Two minutes later, Syracuse added a second goal when Heather Susek tallied her first of the year.

Northeastern responded at the 20:26 mark, as Stuhlmann found the back of the net to cut the lead in half, 2-1. Junior tri-captain Kaela Barker added the helper on Stuhlmann's goal.

Sophomore goalie Lizzie Priest held her own, as Syracuse continued to apply pressure. However, the Orange scored its third goal just before the end of the first half, when Krisin Girouard put in her first of the season to make it 3-1 after the first 35:00.

Priest kept the Huskies in it throughout the second half, and Northeastern forced Syracuse goalie Leann Stiver to make two important saves to hold the score at 3-1. The Orange added a goal late, when Amy Kee scored her first of the season to make it 4-1.

The Huskies attempted seven shots, five on target. Syracuse put 12 shots on goal, with Priest making eight saves.

The Huskies head home for their first game of the season at Sweeney Field on Friday, Sept. 3 when they host Massachusetts at 2 p.m.
