Live stats
The Huskies look to build on their two-game winning streak this weekend as they head to the Nike Invitational in Hanover, N.H. Northeastern will take on two Ivy League foes at the tournament, facing Brown on Friday at 4:30 p.m. then battling tournament host Dartmouth on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
Northeastern last played Brown on Sept. 17, 2003, and fell to the Bears, 3-0. NU has faced Dartmouth just once in program history, and lost to the Big Green, 5-0, on Oct. 21, 2002.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES
Northeastern heads into the tournament after posting back-to-back wins in Rhode Island last weekend, defeating Bryant, 3-0, and URI, 2-1. The wins moved the Huskies to 2-1 on the season and vaulted them to fifth in the NSCAA Mid-Atlantic region rankings.
Sophomore forward
Greta Samuelsdottir leads the Huskies in scoring. The Kopavogur, Iceland native has two goals on the season, including one game-winner. She was named Northeastern Student-Athlete of the week following her performances at Bryant and at URI.
Junior forward
Veronica Napoli is second on the team with a 1-1-3 scoring line. The preseason All-CAA honorable mention assisted on Samuelsdottir's goal at Bryant, and scored the equalizer at URI on a thirty-yard free kick.
Preseason CAA Player of the Year Devin Petta and junior midfielder
Gabbi Jatkola have each notched a goal on the season. Junior defender
Laura Holmstedt is tied with Napoli for the team lead in assists with one.
The Huskies backfield has been solid in the early goings of the 2010 campaign. Anchored by co-captain seniors
Tinna Nielsen and
Lesley Condie, along with junior
Kelly Matthews and Preseason All-CAA sophomore
Sandra Magnusdottir, Northeastern has allowed just four goals in its first three games.
All three of the goalies on Northeastern's roster have seen action this season, but sophomore
Michelle Sopko has started the last two games and appears to be pulling away as the regular starter. Sopko has saved seven of eight shots she's faced in her two starts and has amassed a 2-0 record.
THE LEONE FILE
Head coach
Tracey Leone is in her first season at Northeastern and has found immediate success. Leone inherited a team that won Northeastern's first ever CAA regular season title, and has them playing well so far in 2010. Leone's first recruiting class at NU has already found success, with freshman
Hillary Savoy starting all three games in the midfield and fellow newcomers freshman
Taylor Skeffington and sophomore
Kylie Smith already contributing significant minutes.
Leone looks to bring the success she had at Clemson to Huntington Ave. While at Clemson from 1994-1999, Leone took the Tigers to the NCAA tournament six times, amassing a record of 83-39.
NOTES
• Last year at the Nike Invitational, the Huskies were able to upset Clemson before falling to tournament host and national power Georgia. This year, the Huskies look to be the favorites to win the tournament.
• The Huskies are 0-5 all-time against Brown, last facing the Bears in 2003.
• Sunday will be Northeastern's second-ever contest with Dartmouth.
• Leone will be very familiar with the two Ivy League opponents, having spent the past three years as an assistant at Harvard, where she helped the Crimson capture back-to-back Ivy League titles. Harvard was 4-1-1 against Brown and Dartmouth during Leone's time with the Crimson.
SCOUTING BROWN
Brown's contest with Northeastern will be their first game of the season. The Bears finished 5-9-1 in 2009. The squad's 2-5 record in the Ivy League placed them seventh in the conference.
Brown returns its top three scorers from last year's team. Senior midfielder/forward Joyce Chun led the Bears with four goals in 2009. Senior midfielder Gina Walker was tops on the team with five assists and senior Sylvia Stone's 2-2-6 line was tied for third on the team.
Brown will be testing out a new netminder for their match with the Huskies, as its top two goalies from 2009 both graduated.
Brown head coach Phil Pincince is one of the most successful coaches in NCAA women's soccer history. Heading into his 32nd year as head coach of the Bears, Pincince career record of 265-198-37 places him as the 13th-winningest coach in NCAA Division I history. During his run at Brown, he has won 12 Ivy League titles and reached the NCAA tournament six times.
SCOUTING DARTMOUTH
The tournament host Big Green will take on Colgate on Friday in its first regular season matchup of 2010 before battling the Huskies on Sunday. Last year, Dartmouth went 10-7 and finished third in the Ivy League.
The Big Green return 18 letterwinners and six starters from last years' squad, including two players who were named honorable mention All-Ivy last season in senior defender and co-captain Melissa Krnjaic and junior forward Aly O'Dea. O'Dea led Dartmouth in scoring last year with a 9-1-19 line.
Senior co-captain Sarah Bromley and junior Erin Fleischli anchor the Dartmouth backfield. Fleischli was one of two Dartmouth players to start every game in 2009.
Junior Colleen Hogan will likely start in net for Dartmouth. Hogan returns as the Big Green's starting goalie after posting a 1.18 goals against average with five shutouts last year.
